Carlos is a native of Tegucigalpa, Honduras who moved with his family to Tupelo, Mississippi ( birthplace of Elvis Presley) as a teenager.

Carlos received his A.A. in Theater from Itawamba Jr. College in Fulton, MS ; B.A. in History from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA in 1989. He also received a Teaching Certificate in Secondary Social Studies from Louisiana State University.

While a student at LSU, Carlos had the opportunity to work at Middleton Library as a work-study student. After graduation, his former boss at the library asked him if he would like to work as a temporary Library Assistant at the Instructional Materials Center (now Education Resources). While working at IMC, an opportunity arose to apply for one of five positions open in Reference Services as a permanent Library Assistant. Carlos got one of the five positions. His duties included checking in the materials for Reference Services, provide support to the librarians, work the Reference and Information Desks, etc.

While at LSU, the Internet was in its early stages. He saw the Internet emerge from a menu driver Gopher to the graphic oriented web access of today. He learned how to write HTML from scratch and began to see how the Internet could provide as a medium to access information electronically. It was during this time that the Federal government began to make a committment to providing access to government resources electronically.

After three years of working at LSU, Carlos saw an opportunity to return home to Mississippi by accepting a position as Stacks Supervisor for the Government Documents department of the University of Mississippi Libraries. Though Carlos had been exposed to Government Documents at LSU, he really learned the meat and potatoes of the job while working at Ole Miss. Not only was he the Stacks Supervisor for the collection, but his other duties included Student Supervisor, Stacks Maintenance Supervisor, Needs & Offers Supervisor, Reference Services, and Webmaster for the Government Documents department website.

One day while reading his email from the Government Documents listserv, he saw a job description for a Head of Government Documents at The Evergreen State College. The job was exactly what he had been looking for so long. The position gave him the opportunity to provide the direction the depository needed to go and to really make a difference in helping provide patrons their reference needs. So after working for three years at Ole Miss, Carlos left the position and his family to make the move to Olympia, Washington in January 1999.

Since his arrival at TESC, Carlos has created the Government Documents/Maps website, helped provide direction for the library's ongoing project of placing Government Documents titles on the online catalog (more and more titles are being placed online everyday), made himself available to faculty/staff/students in providing library instruction on how to access government documents, and is constantly finding ways to provide better services for patrons.

Carlos enjoys living in Washington and has found his new home quite lovely. He has managed to make new friends at work and at his local church. He finds the state to be full of leisure opportunities. He has visited Oak Harbor, Port Angeles, Port Townsend , Victoria and Vancouver, B.C., Hoh National Forest, Seattle (of course!), Walla Walla and surrounding areas, seen his first rock concert (Bruce Springsteen at the Tacoma Dome), had the opportunity to go to Safeco Field and saw the first grand slam hit in the park, to Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Rainier, the Oregon Coast
( Seaside, Cannon Beach and Tillamook), the Tulip Festival in Mt. Vernon and to Leavenworth's Christmas Lighting Festival. There's still more places to explore...he still hasn't gone to the Gorge. If you have other suggestions as to where to visit, please let him know.
